A Family Affair
I hear squawking from the Island heronry this morning as early arrivals claim their family nests. I see three grey herons guarding nests and awaiting their female partners. The breeding season starts late January/early February. The squawking comes from herons deep and out of view within the heronry.
That must be rather early, but if you want the best you have to stand out.
It is early, Hans. The marsh hawthorn buds are breaking open too.
Seems like we haven’t had winter yet and here starts preparation for Spring.
The marsh thinks spring is here: hawthorn buds are bursting open.
