Mosquitoes in the UK
There are more than 34 mosquitoes species native to the UK, some of which bite and create a nuisance. The most prevalent species, often misidentified as a gnat, is Culex pipiens; it doesn’t bite but is almost indistinguishable from Culex molestus which does.
Some mosquitoes found in the UK, such as the Asian tiger mosquito, are capable of transmitting dengue and chikungunya fevers.
That’s a good closeup of something most of us would rather not have any interaction with.

Thanks, Steve. I don’t go out on the marsh at this time of year unless liberally sprayed with insect repellent.

DH Lawrence penned a delightful poem titled “The Mosquito”. An excerpt:
“Queer, how you stalk and prowl the air
In circles and evasions, enveloping me,
Ghoul on wings
Winged Victory.”
