Tawny Owls

Although many people believe this owl has exceptional night vision, its retina is no more sensitive than a human’s. The owls asymmetrically placed ears are key to its hunting by giving it excellent directional hearing. Its nocturnal habits and eerie, easily imitated call, have led to a mythical association of the tawny owl with bad luck and death.

  1. Nice shot. Mike.

Supposed to be owls in my area, but I’ve never seen them. I’m probably outdoors at the wrong time.

    • Thanks Vicki. I find slow and methodical scanning of trees works for me. Owls usually remain perched stock still and are so well camouflaged that it is difficult to spot them.
