Hoo Brook Brown Rat.

It was dark, mild, and wet on the marsh this morning, and just about showing a glimmer of dawn when I returned home for breakfast.

Of the two camera traps I am monitoring at the moment, only RatCam had captured action overnight. The camera’s IR lighting is all over the place on this video: a sign that the batteries need replacing, perhaps.

Maybe the lighting adds to the grimness of the subject; although, I think the brown rat is lovely.

Brown Ratty is in a good place: rarely do I see signs of this rodent’s predators on the mud bank outside his home.

      • I expect we have, Mike as I have a lot of bird feeders but I haven’t seen one for a while, just my little bank vole. One year I watched a family of rats trying to get at the peanuts. I had suspended the feeder under the bird table and the young ones (I think) were taking turns jumping off the base of the bird table and trying to land on the peanut feeder. It was quite hilarious as the feeder was swaying backwards and forwards from the activity and they kept missing. This was at night but there was an outside light close to the bird table.
