Good grief!!!
I know!
Wow, something still holding out against winter.
And it was still pretty mobile, Alex.
Great shot!
Thank you Salim.
How beautiful.
And they are mechanical marvels, Emily. :£
Amazingly, dragonflies need around a 20 degree C operating temperature in the wing muscles to fly!
When I shot this image, at 1.25 pm on Saturday, I guessed the air temperature to be around 5 degrees C. The dragonfly made a few short circular flights, landing back on the log, and then flew out of sight. It appeared alert – it was definitely aware of me – rather than dopey. The log end it rested on faced roughly east and upwards, pointing almost directly at the sun. There were also quite a few gnat/midge hatches along the riverbank that morning.
The marsh is full of surprises, Mike. 🙂
